A Philadelphia Area student’s decision to take a semester off of college lead to a thriving business with over 87 thousand Instagram followers and counting.

Meghan Rosko, creator of Nutmeg and Honeybee and current West Chester University student, wanted to work on projects around the house to distract herself after she took a semester off from college following her brother's unexpected passing.

She and her mother were going to a wedding; as a gift Rosko decided to make decorated sugar cookies.

“Little did I know how therapeutic baking would be and the cookies turned out beautiful; this is where my idea for creating a business began,” Rosko said.

A friend in college gave Rosko the nickname, 'Nutmeg', because she would occasionally bake cupcakes for friends and family. “I knew I wanted to incorporate 'Nutmeg' into my business name,” Rosko disclosed.

Rosko and Brendan, her older brother who passed away in 2014, were really close growing up; Rosko felt it only made sense to combine their names and honor him. “I used to call Brendan ‘B’—so that’s where ‘honeybee’ came from,” she revealed.

Now, almost three years later, Nutmeg and Honeybee has grown into a unique business and social media phenomena.

Rosko caters her business towards the majority of generations by showcasing popular culture trends, while additionally prioritizing her own design aesthetic and individuality.

According to the Nutmeg and Honeybee Facebook page and website, customers can place orders via either of these sites to be delivered. Services include: custom decorated sugar cookies, cakes and macaroons.

Rosko confessed, “My favorite thing to make at the moment are French macaroons. They are not the easiest pastry to make, but once you get it down they are so delicate and adorable. My customers have really been liking the macaroons.”

Accomplishments aside, earning a degree is Rosko’s main focus at the moment. Taking it “one step at a time”, the 21-year-old student studying Professional Studies with an emphasis on Nutrition and International Business, wants to keep her possibilities open when thinking about the future of her business and life after graduating college.
